Ebby’s house is located in one of Highlands’ older neighborhoods. The lot is approximately one hundred feet wide, and the distance from the road to the water is approximately fifty feet. The lake is in our backyard!
There are thirty-three feet of garden space on either side of the house. The east side yard is occupied mainly by a stone terrace, planters, stone stairs leading down from the upper story landing, a tall hedge to block our view of the neighboring house, a hammock, and water craft storage. The west side yard has a small, grassy area and our storage shed, with garden areas for flowers and herbs. The space beyond our property line to the west is vacant land that is not deep enough to build upon; the west side of the house, therefore, feels quite private.
The road that leads to the house is well-maintained gravel. There is room for parking two cars on the road, across from the front door, and one or two cars along the west side of the road. The lone house directly next door to us is rarely occupied but is sometimes used as a vacation rental. One of the great restaurants in Highlands, On the Veranda, which overlooks the greater part of Lake Sequoyah, is a ten-minute walk from our door.
